Semi-Pro

Rating: R
Genre: Comedy
Plot: Jackie Moon, coach of his basketball team the Flint Tropicals, is given word that there is going to be a merge of the ABA and the NBA, and only 4 teams of the ABA will be accepted to the NBA. His team is hopeless as they can't work together, and Jackie knows virtually nothing about basketball, he just had the money at one time to start the team. He is out of money and the team is out of luck, but they have to work hard to be in the top 4 teams that move on if they are to have any hope. A one time champion from the NBA joins the team to give them some hope, though he was always on the bench he is the only chance they have to make it into the NBA. Each team member has to develop throughout the movie to work as a team and do any good, and they are successful, though the ending may not be what you expect from the beginning.

My opinion: When I rented this movie, I was prepared to laugh the whole way through, and I was utterly disappointed with the movie over all. I did not find it that funny nor amusing. I actually had to turn it off for awhile because of how stupid it was, but I did eventually finish the movie. The movie had a few good parts that made me laugh, but it was really just a disaster. The movie is definitely only for mature audiences due to sexual humor/slang, partial nudity, and tons of profanity.

I give this movie a pitiful 1 pickle out of 5.

Meet the Spartans

Rating: PG 13

Genre: Comedy/Adventure

Plot: This is a spoof of the movie 300. King Leonidas leads his troop of 13 Spartans to fight the Persians. He has to battle to prevent Xerxes, King of Persia, from taking over his beloved Sparta. He battles with Persians constantly, usually by dance-off or "Your momma..." jokes. He and his troops come across a hunch-backed warrior that offers to help them, but as this warrior happens to be Paris Hilton, Leonidas denies her the chance to fight for Sparta. Hilton then turns and informs Xerxes of a secret passage that can be used to sneak attack the Spartans led by Leonidas. Once Xerxes, corners them, the Spartans fight and ultimately end up fighting Xerxes himself.

My Opinion: I thought this movie was hillarious, but it is only funny by stupid humor. The movie is not serious at all, and is extremely stupid, so be warned it is not for all, especially not those with sophistacated senses of humor. The movie also has a lot of sexual slang and humor, and I do not recommend it to be viewed by small children.

Hot Fuzz

Rated: R

Genre: action/comedy/mystery

Story line: Nicholas Angel is the finest cop London has to offer, with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He's so good, he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing - the sleepy and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. Once there, he is partnered with the well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman. The son of amiable Police Chief Frank Butterman, Danny is a huge action movie fan and believes his new big-city partner might just be a real-life "bad boy". He sees his chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases that he so longs for. Angel is quick to dismiss this as childish fantasy and Danny's puppy-like enthusiasm only adds to Angel's growing frustration. However, as a series of grisly “accidents” overtake the village, Angel is convinced that Sandford is not what it seems and as the intrigue deepens, Danny's dreams of explosive, high-octane, car-chasing, gun fighting, and all-out action seem more and more like a reality. It's time for these small-town cops to break out some big-city justice

My opinion: The movie starts out as a comedy, and slowly turns into a very serious type of action film. It catches your attention with laughter, and then it grabs you by the throat and shakes you around with suspense. I found myself on the edge of my chair for most of the second half of the movie. For the most part, it was a wonderful movie, but like most others it did have its dry spots. Thankfully there are very few. I do not recommend this for young ones because of the gore in certain areas, but I do recommend it to everyone else

Pan's Labyrinth

Rated: R

Genre: dark historical fantasy

Story line: In 1944 fascist Spain, a girl, fascinated with fairy-tales, is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again. This is a beautifully twisted fairy-tale story that never gets old.

My opinion:
this is an enthralling movie that always keeps you guessing. The graphics are sharp, and the story line is catchy. Though it’s made in Spanish it is definitely worth the subtitles - for those who need them – I would recommend this movie to almost anyone with the exception of young children because of some gruesome scenes.

FIGHT CLUB

rated: R

genre: black comedy

Fight Club is narrated by a lonely, unfulfilled young man (Edward Norton) who finds his only comfort in attending disease support groups. Hopping from group to group, he encounters another pretender, or "tourist," the morose Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), who immediately gets under his skin. However, while returning from a business trip, he meets a more intriguing character--the subversive Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). They become fast friends, bonding over a mutual disgust for corporate consumer-culture hypocrisy. Eventually, the two start Fight Club, which meets in a bar's basement where angry men get to vent their frustrations in brutal, bare-knuckle fights. Fight Club soon becomes the men's only real priority; when the club starts a cross-country expansion, things start getting really crazy.

My opinion: Outstanding performances by Norton and Pitt supported by a razor-sharp script and an arsenal of stunning visual effects that include computer animation and sleight-of-hand editing. One of the most unique films of the late 20th century, FIGHT CLUB is a pitch-black comedy of striking intensity. If you cant tell, that means I liked it, and that I recommend it to everyone with the exception of young children.

The Chornicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Rating: PG

Genre: Fantasy/Adventure

Plot: 1300 years have passed in Narnia since the Pevensies have last been, and much has changed. Prince Caspian is on the run as his Uncle, the king of Thalmarin, has had a son and is ordering for Caspian's execution. He discovers that Narnians still exist, though he was taught that the Thalmarins had killed them off. He and the Pevensies lead the Narnian's to battle with the Thalmarians to win Narnia back.

My Opinion: I thought Prince Caspian was an amazing movie. The plot was good, though I felt there were many points in the movie that twists to make it even better could have been added. The effects are not a whole lot better than the first movie, but that is no real problem as they are still amazing. There are many points in the movie that did an excellent job at creating good suspense and kept me thinking intensely as to what would happen next. I personally liked the first movie better, as it's plot was a bit more in depth, but the sequel has so many great battle scenes that are amazing. It gets rather violent at parts, so the movie may not be a good one for small children to view.

I think the thing I like most about this movie is how it combines a great Fantasy adventure, with action scenes that are supposed to be taken seriously, and still ties in some good humor. There are quite a few parts in the movie that jokes are made and what not that do a good job of easing some of the tension in the movie.

I give this movie 4 1/2 pickles out of 5!
